Hair Bun Tips

June 24, 2010 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

As women, we are often in search of simple but elegant hairstyles that can take us from a day in the office to a night on the town. Our ideal hairstyles save us time, money and the hassle of fussing with tresses and risking being late to an event. Hair buns grace the pages of fashion magazines and are worn by women from a variety of backgrounds and lifestyles.

Put a Bun in It

Buns are one the simplest hairstyles you can craft at home with a few supplies you probably already have in your bathroom or boudoir. You need a paddle brush, hair pins, hair elastics, spritz and a spray bottle filled with water.

Use the paddle brush to detangle your hair. Spray your hair with water, brush it up or back into a ponytail. Use a hair elastic to hold the ponytail in place; whether you decide to wear it high or low. Twist your ponytail around to create a bun and use hair pins to secure it in place. For a more textured look, braid your hair before twisting it around to create a bun.

A Bun of Your Own

The most common bun is the ballerina-style, worn pulled back, low, tight and sleek. When it comes to buns, you will find an option to suit your tastes. Try loose buns for evenings out and tight, structured buns for the office.

For longer hair, try wearing your bun high at the crown of your head. Add some flair with a double-bun style. The Care Fair website suggests parting the hair down the middle, creating two low ponytails and wrapping each ponytail around to create a bun. Chignon style buns are worn low like “ballerina buns,” with the hair pinned to the nape of neck.

Say Goodbye to Boring Buns

Make your bun fit your personal style or the event you are attending, by adding accessories. Adorn your hair with an artificial or real flower and secure it tightly with a hair pin. Use a decorative head band to add pizazz to your bun, whether you wear your bun high or low. Hair sticks come in various colors and textures and can help a bun hairstyle pop. Feathers and decorative hair pins, adorned with jewels or beads, can also bring your bun hairstyle to life.

Bun-Worthy Events

Buns aren’t just for ballet recitals. Low-maintenance and timeless, buns are an ideal hairstyle for almost any event. From cocktail parties to a day shopping at a local farmer’s market, buns give women a comfortable hairstyle. For a sophisticated look at work, try a low bun with no accessories, spice up the look at night by adding an accessory. Style your bridal party with buns for a stylish look.
