One old wives’ tale states that you can tell whether you are having a boy or girl baby, based on the heart rate of the baby in utero. Medical studies have shown this to be incorrect, except in labor and birth, but by the time you get to that stage, it’s only a matter of hours before you find out the baby’s sex for real. Still, it’s fun to use the heart rate to guess your baby’s gender before you get your first glimpse at the real goods.
Step 1
Lie down and relax. Expose your stomach.
Step 2
Apply a generous amount of ultrasound gel to the doppler probe.
Step 3
Place the doppler probe on your stomach to hear the heartbeat. Depending on the baby’s age, it can be difficult to find the heartbeat. Try placing the probe in the middle of your stomach and pointing it toward your pelvis.
Step 4
Differentiate the baby’s heartbeat from your own. Yours will be slow and loud. The baby’s will be much faster.
Step 5
Count the number of heartbeats you hear in a minute. If the heart rate is about 140 beats per minute, you may be carrying a boy. If it’s less than that, you may be carrying a girl.
Warnings
- This is not an accurate way to determine baby’s gender. You won’t know for sure until you see the genitals on an ultrasound or until the baby is born.
