Products to Cover Thinning Hair

Women can lose their hair for a variety of reasons. Some experience hair loss after a big event in their lives and bodies, such as having a baby or undergoing surgery. Others may have thinning hair because they suffer from a condition, such as hypothyroidism or anemia, according to WebMD. If you have thinning hair, there are some products you can try to cover or even reverse it. Check with your doctor first to determine the reason for your hair loss.

Hair Dye

If you’ve taken good care of your hair and it is thinning for genetic reasons, not because it is damaged, you can try to color it to make it appear fuller and more voluminous. WedMD recommends getting your hair professionally colored, using either permanent or semi-permanent dyes, so that you do not over process your hair. If you do decide to color your hair at home, you may want to stick with a semi-permanent hair color, which does not contain ammonia or peroxide, which can damage your hair and lead to more hair loss.

Hair Care Products

Use a high-quality volume-building shampoo and conditioner when you wash your hair. Washing your hair too much can damage it, but leaving it dirty can make thinning hair appear thinner. Skip the drugstore shampoos and invest in a brand from a salon. Do the same for a volume-building conditioner and a styling product, such as mousse. Inexpensive hair products tend to contain beeswax, which can build-up and cause further hair loss and breakage, according to WebMD. Make your hair appear fuller by putting the salon-brand mousse on at the roots, then gently blow drying your hair, lifting it from the roots with a brush.

Hats, Scarves and Hair Extensions

According to the “New York Times,” many women visit their salon for hair extensions to add volume to their thinning hair. Professionally applied hair extensions can last for up to six months, depending on how quickly your hair grows. They can also prohibitively expensive, especially if real human hair is used. If you decide to use hair extensions to cover thinning hair, look for a stylist who has plenty of experience installing extensions. Poorly installed extensions can pull your hair out or cause it to break. Less expensive and less risky ways of covering thinning hair include wearing hats and scarves over your head.
