Take a page from the fashion notebook of celebrities, such as Madonna, and refresh your hair color to amp up your style. Several hair color trends can inform your decision. It depends on if you want the in-your-face drama of Lady Gaga or the more subtle color of stars such as Jessica Biel and Anne Hathaway. When you are selecting a trendy hair color, consider your skin tone and whether you want your hair color to extend your look or to serve as a focal point.
Foiling
For people seeking a more natural but trendy look, consider foiling in color. Rather than creating the blatant striped look for which highlighting is known, foiling blends three or four different grades of a certain hue. The stylist uses foils to create highlights and lowlights. Try a dark brown with auburn or violet highlights complementing it, or black hair combined with deep reds or eggplant.
Dulce de Leche
The rich, warm hue of dulce de leche, also known as caramel brown, makes everyone from Jennifer Aniston to Drew Barrymore looking sun-kissed. The magic of this golden brown hue is that it lightens dark brunette hair, but it also makes blonde hair look less brassy. Caramel brown also complements a variety of skin tones.
Trendy Retro Hair Color
As in the fashion world, beauty products go in cycles, with retro hair color suddenly becoming the trend of the moment. For a singular retro 1980s look, go with bold Cyndi Lauper-style hues, such as fuchsia, blue and citron. Rather than color all your hair one of these shades, try a stripe that evokes a Mohawk cut. For a modern, emo-inspired update, use a bright color on top and blonde or black hair on the bottom. If you have light-colored hair, you may want to experiment to this look without fully committing by using a temporary wash-in color.
Almost Platinum
Emulate the superstar look of Christina Aguilera by going a shade warmer than platinum. This almost-platinum look complements a pale skin color well. This hue is less high maintenance than the pure platinum look, which fades quickly and damages dry or fragile hair. Reese Witherspoon sports this brighter-than-honey hue that has more dimension than platinum blonde.
