Hot Styles for Hair

August 23, 2010 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

One of the quickest ways to dramatically update your look is to adopt a hot new hairstyle. Today’s hairstyles range from high-maintenance asymmetrical cuts to club-inspired colors, wash-and-go to red-carpet ready. Before settling on a new hairstyle, take into consideration the shape of your face, the amount of time you want to devote to styling it and the frequency you will want to get your new hairstyle trimmed.

Pixie Cut

Take a page from the book of celebrities, such as Natalie Portman, and try a classic pixie cut. This hot hairstyle works well on women who have straight or wavy hair, rather than curly hair. The cut features short hair all around but longer, wispy bangs, typically swept to one side. Maintaining a pixie cut requires trimming it every four or five weeks.

Bohemian Braid

For people who want to keep their long locks but amp up their style, try a bohemian-inspired update debuted by actress Sienna Miller. Dampen your long or medium-length hair. Gently finger-comb mousse or smoothing cream through your hair, and blow dry. Part your hair on the side. Divide the front of the parted side into three sections and braid it or do a French braid. Extend the braid across your hairline, like a headband, and pin it in place.

Emo Hair

The club look often revolves around emo hairstyle trends. For an emo hairstyle, play with asymmetry. The top may stay long and the bottom short, or vice-versa, or you may try a retro new-wave look with one side longer than the other. Emphasize the asymmetry with color. Begin with black hair either on the bottom or top half of your hair, and color the other half blond, pink or electric blue.

Naturally Curly Style

Many contemporary curly hairstyles emphasize rather than tone down curl. Make the most of this trend by adopting a routine that brings out the bounce in your hair. Skip shampooing and massage, and rinse your scalp instead. Scrunch out the excess moisture, and finger comb leave-in conditioner into your hair. Wrap your hair in an all-cotton T-shirt, and pin it at the sides. Release your hair in 15 to 30 minutes, and gently stretch out your curls for beautiful bounce.
