Best Skin Care Guide

August 23, 2010 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

Although you see it every day and often take it for granted, your skin plays an important part in protecting your other systems from toxic substances and organisms that cause disease. As the largest organ in your body, your skin forms a barrier between your insides and the outer world. Keeping your skin attractive and healthy requires a little time, effort and a basic skin care regimen that fits your budget and schedule.

Nutritional Needs

Like the rest of your body and your various systems, your skin requires adequate levels of nutrients to perform at its peak level. According to the MayoClinic.com, antioxidant foods can help protect the health of your skin. Include carrots, apricots, blueberries, spinach, tomatoes, beans and salmon in your diet.

Protective Measures

Guard your skin against the damaging effects of sun exposure. Over time, sun exposure can increase your risk of developing age spots, wrinkles and skin cancer. Avoid spending time outdoors during the heat of the day, or use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and protective clothing.

Hygiene Requirements

Your skin encounters various pollutants during the course of a day, including some that contain bacteria and viruses. Keep your skin clean by washing with a gentle cleanser and warm water. Avoid aggressive scrubbing and strong soaps that can strip natural oils from your skin. Gently pat your skin dry with an absorbent towel.

Topical Considerations

You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on your skin care regimen, contrary to the advertisements you may see in magazines and on television. Although your skin doesn’t require toners and moisturizers, these products may make your skin feel smoother, resilient and more comfortable. Choose products without a lot of additives, and use them according to the package instructions.

Cautions

In addition to sun exposure, other practices can damage the health of your skin. Alcohol and cigarettes can damage and dull your complexion. For the healthiest skin, toss out your cigarettes and eliminate or reduce the amount of alcohol you consume.
