Mariska Hargitay Knows Working Motherhood Means “You Can’t Have Everything”

Mariska Hargitay tries to spend as much time with her son, 4-year-old August, as possible.

On the weekends, instead of sleeping in, the family wakes up early to cook “a whole big breakfast extravaganza with pancakes, bacon and eggs, oatmeal and apples,” explains the ‘Law & Order: SVU’ star, 46, in the September issue of ‘Good Housekeeping.’

Mariska explains that part of the reason for the early weekend wake-up call is to make up for the long hours she has on set. But, she’s even found a way to work past that. She stays connected with August through daily video chats.

“When you love your kid, there’s a string that attaches you, and you are always connected even when you are doing other things,” she says.

Still, Mariska can’t help feeling like she’s missing out, even when it comes to some of life’s most mundane moments. “I get jealous that other people get to take August to school and pick him up,” she admits, “You can’t have everything, though.”
