How to Organize a Child’s Small Bedroom

A manageable organizational system in your child’s small room keeps the toys under control. You both are better able to find the items you need without searching high and low through piles of clutter. The space constraints in a small bedroom make organization more of a challenge, but there are many ways to give all of your child’s possessions a designated spot. You need a chunk of time to put the organization system into play, along with regular cleanup sessions to keep it organized.

Step 1

Sort through the entire contents of your child’s room, putting items in separate piles depending on whether you want to keep, toss, store or sell them. This helps reduce the contents of your child’s room to the items she needs and uses, while beginning the organization process.

Step 2

Write a list of the ways your child uses his room. This varies by age but might include sleeping, playing, reading, crafts and homework. Designate an area of the room for each activity, with some functional areas overlapping as necessary. For example, you might use a desk for both homework and craft projects.

Step 3

Arrange the large pieces of furniture within the room to leave the maximum amount of available space for playing and other activities. Try different furniture arrangements to find the most functional option.

Step 4

Store off-season clothes, shoes and other items your child doesn’t use frequently in plastic storage totes that will fit under the bed. This maximizes space that normally goes unused. Label the front of each bin so you can easily identify the contents.

Step 5

Install shelving onto the wall at a height your child can easily reach. Place baskets filled with toys, books and other items on the shelves. By using individual shelves attached to the walls, you free up limited floor space for playing.

Step 6

Install hooks on the wall just under the shelves. Hang mesh bags on the hooks that can hold dress-up clothes or lightweight toys. Use a separate bag for each type of toy to keep them organized.

Step 7

Install additional shelving above the windows and doors in the bedroom. Store items on these shelves that your child doesn’t need access to on a regular basis.

Step 8

Use large, decorative pillows as soft seating when your child reads or plays on the floor. Place the pillows on the bed when not in use so the floor doesn’t appear cluttered.

Step 9

Suspend hanging organizers from the ceiling of your child’s room. This provides more specialized storage space without taking up floor or shelf space.

Step 10

Use a specialty over-door hook system on your child’s bedroom door. Hang a laundry bag on the hook to hold her dirty laundry, eliminating the need for a hamper taking up floor space.
