The Best Dog Breeds for Children With Allergies

December 10, 2010 by ds_8278 Leave a Comment

For some children, even minimal exposure to dogs can trigger sneezing as well as other more serious respiratory problems. According to Healthy Children, it’s estimated that10 percent of kids are allergic to animals, but when it’s your child begging for a puppy, it’s hard to say no. Pet Education reports there are no hypoallergenic dogs, but poodles, terriers and schnauzers have less dander and therefore a better record of allowing kids with allergies to enjoy them. Many of these dogs are particularly suited to homes with children.

Terriers

American hairless terriers top the list of terriers because they have no dander or body hair. Most people who cannot tolerate other terriers usually do well with these. Another popular terrier on the list is the Airedale terrier, the largest of the terriers; however, they might be a little too rough for very small children. Other terriers good for kids with allergies include the Bedlington terrier, The border terrier, the Kerry blue terrier, the soft-coated Wheaten terrier, the Tibetan terrier, the West Highland white terrier, the wire-haired fox terrier and the Yorkshire terrier.

Poodles

Poodles, including poodle mixes, can be good choices for kids with allergies. With poodle mixes, however, it’s important to show some caution before adopting a dog with only one hypoallergenic parent; not all dogs in one litter will be the same. Among the popular poodle mixes are the cockapoo, a cross between the cocker spaniel and the poodle; and the malti-poo, a cross between the maltese and the poodle; the schnoodle, a cross between the schnauzer and poodle; and the shepadoodle, a cross between the German shepherd and the standard poodle. Other poodles to choose from are the toy poodle, the standard poodle, and the miniature poodle. These poodle dogs are considered good with kids, however, the toy poodle is not recommended because it has a higher likelihood of snapping at children.

Other Breeds

Bo, the Portuguese water dog, became famous when he was chosen as a White House pet for President Obama’s daughters who were restricted in their choice by Malia’s allergies. There is also a Spanish water dog. Other dogs that kids with allergies have had good luck with include schnauzers — miniature, standard and giant. The Bolognese, a small, white-haired dog, is playful and trains easily. The Shih-Tzu, also known as the lion dog, is another popular dog that works well for some children with allergies. Each of these breeds is considered suitable as pets in families with children.
