Spinning Class During Pregnancy

December 10, 2010 by ds_25061 Leave a Comment

Pregnancy can lead you to evaluate many aspects of your life, including your level of physical fitness. Exercising during your pregnancy can supply numerous benefits. Spinning classes provide group environments that can help encourage and motivate you to stay active. Talk to your doctor before beginning an exercise routine, including signing up for a spinning class, during your pregnancy.

Exercise During Pregnancy

Regular exercise provides pregnant women with many benefits. Exercise may help reduce backaches and constipation, increase your energy, help you sleep and boost your mood. However, pregnancy can cause changes that may affect your ability to exercise. Common changes during pregnancy include relaxed ligaments, loss of balance and an increased heart rate.

Spinning Class

A favorite activity of many exercise proponents, spinning classes use equipment that resembles stationary bicycles. These classes often include invigorating music and instructors that direct the sequence and length of the sessions. This group exercise can help you burn calories and tone muscles.

Heart Rate

If you are healthy and your pregnancy is proceeding normally, you do not need to be overly concerned about limiting your heart rate, as long you are accustomed to regular exercise. Limit your spinning time to about 30 minutes and adjust your spinning speed and bike tension to allow you to speak normally throughout your routine. An inability to carry on a normal conversation can indicate that you are pushing yourself too hard.

Benefits

While regular bicycling provides a healthy pastime when you aren’t pregnant, your growing belly can increase your risks of falling. Stationary bicycles and spinning classes provide a safer alternative during your pregnancy, reducing your risk of accidents. While high-impact exercises may lead to joint injuries, low-impact exercises, like spinning, can help strengthen your muscles without risking your joints. Exercising during your pregnancy can help you maintain a healthy weight and may help decrease the time it takes to get back into shape after the delivery of your baby.

Precautions

Your body undergoes certain physiological changes during pregnancy. Mechanical changes related to the increased weight from breast tissue, uterus and fetus could result in a shift in your center of gravity. Although spinning classes pose less risk of falling than bicycling, use caution when getting on and off your piece of equipment. Stop exercising and contact your doctor if you feel faint or dizziness, experience vaginal bleeding, uterine contractions, chest pain or shortness of breath.
