Engaging with your child is fun and productive as you introduce basic math concepts through play with your child.  Try this activity!

Fruit Fractions

Target Age:      Middle Four-Year Old

 Materials:         Bananas, apples, etc., plastic knife, cutting board 

What to Do:  Introduce your child to the concept of fractions with this simple activity. Choose one fruit to leave whole and introduce the idea of whole. Take the next piece of fruit and cut it in half. Introduce the word “half” and show your child both halves. Let your child hold a half, then hold a whole fruit. Continue with another piece of fruit that you cut into thirds, then another that you cut into fourths. Review and use all the pieces of fruit to enjoy a healthy snack together!
