Menopause Supplements for Women

January 25, 2011 by ds_65371 Leave a Comment

As the symptoms of menopause hit, many women become eager to assuage them. If you’re in the midst of your life change, you may find that some supplements can both ease your symptoms and ensure that you remain healthy as your body adjusts to this hormone modification. However, before taking any supplement, you should always first check with a health care professional to discuss your individual needs and situation.

Flaxseed Oil

Flaxseed oil, as well as flaxseeds themselves, may reduce some of the symptoms of menopause. As WebMD reports, flaxseed may reduce hot flashes by as much as 35 percent and night sweats by as much as 44 percent. While research has not conclusively proven these benefits, many menopausal women find taking this supplement an easy and safe method of potentially curbing heat-related symptoms.

St. John’s Wort

St. John’s Wort may be of use to women going through menopause who suffer from sleep disturbances or depression. It is believed to be helpful in relieving mild to moderate depression, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center, making it a wise choice for ladies who find themselves a bit down-in-the-dumps during menopause. However, St. John’s Wort should only be taken under a physician’s supervision.

Black Cohosh

Black cohosh is a derivative of a North American plant. WebMD reports that this natural supplement has been tied to a reduction in hot flash frequency for women going through menopause. Always consult with you doctor before taking black cohosh. Additionally, you should not use this supplement if you suffer from liver problems as it may exacerbate these issues.

Vitamin E

Another hot flash remedy that may be as close as a supplement aisle is vitamin E. Taking this supplement may help reduce hot flash frequency, notes MayoClinic.com. While vitamin E is generally a safe supplement, as with all drugs or supplements, you should be cautious and avoid taking more than 400 IUs of the vitamin daily as exceeding this dosage may prove unsafe.

Calcium

As women move through menopause, their bone density may suffer. This bone density decline is due to the hormone changes that accompany this life change. To counteract this negative menopause side-effect and fortify bone strength, women can add calcium supplements to their daily pill routine.
