How to Really Start Saving Money at the Grocery Store

One of the best ways to save some money is at the grocery store!

Depending on how much money you need to save and how much time you have, there are a few ways to achieve this.

1- Let’s start with the easiest one first: Price Matching. Stores like Walmart and Target both allow Price Matching. Basically they will price match any other grocery store’s printed ad for the same exact product. Just take the other store’s ads with you to the register and let the cashier know that you are Price Matching items in your cart. You can then tell the cashier each price and they will manually enter it in. (If you are shopping at Target and wanting to Price Match, you will need to do so at Customer Service.)

If you are a new Price Matcher, you will want to print out your store’s Corporate Price Matching Policy from their website and take it with you. You may run into a cashier who doesn’t know the policy. Or you might even run into a manager who doesn’t understand the policy. So having that on hand can definitely help if you run into issues.

2- Couponing will save you the most money. It takes more time than Price Matching. However, if you can stick to it, you could actually save anywhere from $2,000- $8,000 a year!! And at the same time, you will be building up a food storage to have in case of emergencies. Signing up for a Sunday Only or Weekend Only Subscriptio to your newspaper that includes the Sunday Coupon Inserts is extremely helpful

Every store’s coupon policy is different. So the most important thing you can do when you get started is to read their Corporate Coupon Policy online and print it out.

The basics of couponing is that you can use a coupon on top of whatever price that item is selling at. And if you have multiple copies of that coupon (by getting multiple copies of the Sunday Newspaper for coupons) you can actually purchase multiples of that item that is a great price. You can use one right away and put the others in a storage room, or basement. The next time you run out, instead of running to the store and paying full price for it, you can just go to your storage area and “Shop” your own stockpile!

Now, once you have couponing under your belt and you are starting to get into a rhythm, you can actually combine Price Matching AND Couponing at the grocery store. This obviously takes the most time. But if you could save 75% off each time you go to the grocery store, is it worth it to you??

Here’s an excerpt from the first book I wrote that will really help you understand the value of couponing:

“In one year of the Sunday paper, you can see about $8,000 worth of coupons. Understand that I definitely don’t use all of them. And you won’t either. So let’s say that you use only 1/3 of the coupons. That’s a savings of $2,667 a year! Let’s be even more conservative and say you only use 1/4 of the coupons. That’s still a savings of $2,000 a year for ONE COPY of the Sunday Paper!

And to make the scenario even crazier, if you are getting multiple copies of the Sunday paper, you can multiply your savings by the number of copies you get. So if you get three copies you could easily save $6,000 a year on your grocery bill, have an awesome food storage for emergencies, and never have to waste your TIME heading to the store to pay full price to pick up something you ran out of at home.”

After doing a little math with the time it takes you to clip and spend time at the grocery store, you can actually make over $14 an hour couponing! If you are a Stay-at-Home-Mom, this could be a really big blessing for you and your family. And it’s something you can easily do at home with your kids.

There are SO many great ways to save on Groceries! So hopefully these two ways can get you started and help you build a food storage and keep more money in your checking account.
