Smiling it Forward™ through Headaches

November 13, 2014 by Guest Writer Leave a Comment

This is a guest post by Tara Carlson – blogger at Dividing by Zero and mom of four way-too-active boys.

The following post is sponsored by TYLENOL®.

The saying goes “If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.” But if you happen to be a mama yourself, you know that the more accurate version is “If baby ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.” (That’s true even if your “baby” happens to be old enough to shave and drive a car). When your baby has a headache, no one is smiling until that headache is gone.

I have four sons who range in age from “delighted every day to discover that he still has piggy toes” all the way up to “legal adult but still my baby”. While my boys are almost abnormally healthy, they do get their share of aches and pains and assorted boo-boos. Everything from teething woes to bumps and bruises to various sibling-inflicted injuries (both accidental and not). With four boys, a fair amount of roughhousing and tomfoolery takes place. And sometimes, the results are painful.

For example, did you know that a Wii remote can be a dangerous weapon? One of my boys (six years old at the time) discovered that the hard way – with his forehead, as his older brother was playing a game that involved a lot of arm-flailing. The consequences of walking past his brother at just the wrong time were an emergency room visit, a shot of Lidocaine straight to the eyebrow, some liquid bandage (or as it’s known in our house, “kid superglue”) to put said eyebrow back together, and one whopper of a headache.

Let me tell you, that was one miserable six-year-old for a little while. With one very sad, guilt-ridden older brother.

Thankfully, the ER doctor gave my little guy a dose of TYLENOL® before we even left the hospital. By the time we got home (after a quick stop at the grocery store to buy some TYLENOL® for the house), he was feeling quite a bit better. A little leery of the Wii, perhaps, but the tears had stopped and his headache was down to a dull throb. And within an hour or two, you would’ve never guessed that the same kid had been in pain and miserable just a short time previously. Not only was he back to his normal energetic, smiling self – he was even playing on the Wii (with the bearer-of-the-Wii-remote patiently teaching him how to play to make up for the accident)!

But teaching your little brother how to play a game on the Wii isn’t the only way to make a child feel better. TYLENOL®, a brand relied upon by moms for nearly 60 years, invites you to Share a Smile to help keep kids happy and healthy by ensuring a doctor’s visit is always within reach for kids in need. SMILING IT FORWARD™ – uploading a picture that makes you smile – results in a $1* donation to Children’s Health Fund! So share those smiles to help keep kids everywhere smiling!

I have received information and materials from McNeil Consumer Healthcare, Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc., the makers of TYLENOL®. The opinions stated are my own. This is a sponsored post.

* Between June 23, 2014 and November 30, 2014, McNeil Consumer Healthcare Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc., the makers of TYLENOL® is inviting anyone 18 and older to upload a “smile” photo on the TYLENOL® Facebook page. Each approved “smile” will trigger a $1 donation from TYLENOL® to Children’s Health Fund, with a minimum donation of $75,000 and a maximum donation of $100,000.
