Here Is What It’s Like To Be A Single Mom In America

According to the The Shriver Report, more than 42 million women living in America are on the brink of poverty. Katrina Gilbert is one of them.

The 30-year-old is the subject of a new new HBO documentary that shows what it’s like to be a single mom in America. “Paycheck to Paycheck: The Life and Times of Katrina Gilbert,” produced by Maria Shriver, is an effort to show the day-to-day challenges that so many women face.
Gilbert, a single mom of three children, makes $9.49 an hour as a certified nursing assistant – barely enough to scrape by.
“This past year, I couldn’t even give [any] of them a birthday party. Not even a birthday present,” she says in the trailer. “I didn’t expect to be a single mom of three children but I am and I’m trying to deal with it the best way I can.”
The film shows Gilbert’s struggle to get ahead while facing the frustration of getting knocked back by a system that almost seems designed to see her fail.
It’s enough to break your heart.
