What Are Some Good Exercise Routines?

October 11, 2009 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

Creating some basic exercise routines can help you stay on track when it comes to your fitness. Adding some variety by rotating exercise routines alleviates boredom and makes it easier to stick to a consistent exercise schedule. Basic cardio exercises and strength training can give you more energy throughout the day and prevent many health problems related to obesity.

Walking

Walking for 30 minutes a day gives you a great low-impact workout and provides strength training and cardio exercise. Exercise routines are more successful if they are easy to maintain, and many people find it easy to fit walking into their normal routine. Finding a walking buddy can help make walking enjoyable and provide motivation to continue exercising. Alternating between fast and slow walking can help burn more fat and increase muscle.

Yoga

Yoga is a relaxing, low-impact exercise that many people enjoy. Yoga can be done in the privacy of your own home with an exercise video or by practicing positions that have been previously learned. Recreation centers and gyms often offer yoga classes as part of a membership fee or for a very low fee.

Basic Strength Training

Strength training is an important part of overall health but it does not require expensive equipment or a membership to a gym. Basic exercises such as leg lifts, push-ups, sit-ups, squats, and lunges can help build muscle without using any exercise equipment. Setting aside time during the day to do 10 to 15 minutes of strength training exercises can make a big difference in muscle tone and quality.

Swimming

Swimming can be a very calming form of exercise, and it is extremely easy on your joints. Indoor swimming pools can be used all year long, and outdoor swimming pools can help you enjoy nicer weather and get some fresh air. Swimming is a full-body workout because the water provides resistance over your entire body. Water walking is a great alternative to swimming if you prefer a more mild workout.

Biking

Biking is a fun exercise that is great for the whole family. Many moms enjoy biking with their kids, either riding alongside them or pulling them in a bike trailer. During the warmer months, biking can be a great way to get some exercise while running short errands around the neighborhood or to nearby stores. Biking provides a great cardio workout and strengthens the leg and core muscles.
