Ways to Condition Hair

October 11, 2009 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

The hair is a person’s crowning glory, which is especially true for women. Men can go hairless but women often cannot. The hair also takes center-stage when it comes to overall appearance. A person wearing a very nice outfit and beautiful makeup will not look complete without the proper hairstyle. Often, people do take notice about other people’s hair. They know when a person just had a new hairdo or when a person is having a bad hair day. It is for these reasons that the hair needs special attention daily. Shampooing and applying conditioner are the two most common daily regimens that people can do. Whether you have normal, fine and limp, or dry or damaged hair, it is important that you know the right methods to use.

Normal Hair

Contrary to what some people may think, normal hair still needs conditioning. Normal hair can also suffer from everyday damages, such as the heat of the sun, smoke or air pollution and dirt. If you have normal hair, you need to apply conditioner made especially for that type of hair to revitalize and bring it back to life. After applying shampoo, rinse your hair thoroughly. Apply a conditioner all over your hair and gently massage your scalp. Leave the conditioner on for about three minutes before rinsing it thoroughly with water. People with normal hair can apply conditioner every other day.

Dry or Damaged Hair

It is preferable for people with dry or damaged hair to use a leave-in conditioner or a hair mask. The best method of applying the hair mask is to condition first, which means to apply conditioner before applying the shampoo. Apply a treatment hair mask to dry or damaged hair for about 10 minutes before you shampoo in order to produce silky strands of hair. By applying the conditioner first, the natural oils can penetrate the cuticle and soften it from within. Rinse the conditioner, apply shampoo made for dry or damaged hair, and then rinse it off thoroughly. It is advisable to apply the treatment mask at least once a week for best results.

Fine and Limp Hair

Conditioners with antioxidants can help protect fine and weaker hair. These conditioners can also help add volume to limp hair by zeroing in on the weakest part of the hair and by fortifying the hair shaft with protein. Fine hair can benefit from conditioning two to three times a week. Apply the conditioner along the shaft while avoiding the scalp. Gently apply the conditioner on each palm and then place a section of hair strands in between both palms and push in downward motion along the length of your hair. Repeat this step until you reach the last section of hair. Leave the conditioner on for approximately four to five minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
