How to Give Yourself a Manicure

Manicures are enjoyable, they are essential to good nail health, and they can also be expensive. Most women get a manicure every two weeks. So just by cutting out professional manicures, you can save nearly $1,000 a year! Learn how to give yourself a manicure — saving money and still looking groomed and beautiful.

Step 1

Get prepared. Purchase the supplies you need if you don’t already have them. If you’re not sure what color fingernail polish to purchase, there are many Web sites where you can view examples of colors before going to shop for them. You’ll want to work in a well-ventilated area and ensure that you won’t be interrupted. You don’t want to have to answer your phone or the door with wet nails.

Step 2

Trim and shape your nails before you begin polishing. If you would rather have your nails rounded, cut off any excess length with the clippers, and then round the ends of your nails using the file. If you enjoy squared nails, cut straight across with the clippers, and then gently shape the corners and tips with the file. When you’re finished, wash your hands to remove any debris. Make sure your hands are completely clean.

Step 3

Take care of your cuticles. Push your cuticles back with the cuticle tool. Then, using the cutting edge, run the tool gently along the cuticle where it meets the nail. Do not push or force the cuticle tool, as this can cause injury. Only cut off the excess that appears naturally when you run the tool along the cuticle. Apply a tiny dab of cuticle lotion to each cuticle, making sure that you don’t apply the lotion to the actual fingernail.

Step 4

Polish your fingernails. This should be done carefully, starting in the middle, near the cuticle, with a loaded brush. Use one stroke to pull the polish down the center of the nail. Do the same on either side to ensure a neat, even coat. If any of the polish misses the nail and gets on your finger, use a cotton swab lightly dipped in nail polish remover to take it off. Paint both hands, and allow the first coat to dry.
When they have dried, apply a second coat, then allow that coat to dry. When the second coat has dried, apply a coat of the shiny top coat to give your nails a wet, freshly polished look. Check the fingernails to ensure that they are all evenly and neatly coated. Remove any excess polish on your fingers with the cotton swab.
By using the steps above, you can give yourself a great looking manicure and save the money you would have spent hiring a professional.
