How to Make Ornaments With Old CDs

Making ornaments from old or scratched CDs is a good way to recycle items for a more earth-friendly holiday. There are three ways to quickly and inexpensively make CD ornaments to be used as decorations for homes and offices. These projects are easy enough for children as young as 6 years old to make, as long as they are supervised.

CD Photo Frame Ornament

Step 1

Use a pair of pliers to break off the plastic center of the CD by clamping down on the plastic and bending the pliers downward in a sharp movement. Discard the plastic.

Step 2

Choose a photo that is clear and that has a lot of contrast.

Step 3

Lay the CD on top of your photo. Move the CD around so that the hole in the CD frames an interesting part of the photo.

Step 4

Tape the photo to the CD so that the image is showing as you’d like it. Trim off the excess photo.

Step 5

Glue a loop of string on the back of the CD to use as a hanger for your frame.

Step 6

Decorate your frame by add items like buttons, beads, stickers or silk flowers with craft glue to the outer edges of the picture and the CD.

Outdoor Christmas Tree Ornaments

Step 1

Dip the eraser of a pencil into green enamel paint. Press it onto the CD to make randomly placed dots.

Step 2

Clean the eraser off and dry it. Dip it into red enamel paint and make dots on the CD.

Step 3

Cut 1 foot of ribbon. Loop the ribbon through the CD, and tie the ribbon in a bow for a hanger.

Step 4

Make several ornaments, and hang them on an outdoor Christmas tree for a weatherproof display.

Photo Collage Ornament

Step 1

Choose several photos and cut out the subjects.

Step 2

Glue the photos to both sides of the CD, leaving a small hole in the center of the CD.

Step 3

Cover both sides of the CD ornament with a sheet of lamination. Cut off the excess around the edges.

Step 4

Use the tip of your scissors to poke a hole through the lamination where you left the hole in the pictures.

Step 5

Cut 1 foot of ribbon and tread it through the hole. Tie the ends together for a hanger.

Warnings

  • Be careful when breaking the plastic off the CD. The pieces are sharp and can cut or pierce the skin. Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes.
