Foods for Weight Loss

April 30, 2010 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

Many people struggle with weight loss because reducing the number of calories that you eat ends up making you feel hungry (and ready to reach for that candy bar). If you want to successfully lose weight, you need to look for foods that will fill you up and keep you feeling satisfied, without packing a big caloric punch. Stick with these types of foods, and weight loss will be easier.

Eggs

Eggs are low in calories and fat and high in protein, making them an excellent choice for your breakfast. Prepare them in healthy ways–without fat–such as poaching, boiling or cooking with a nonstick pan. Add a few vegetables to your omelet or scrambled eggs to increase the nutritional count.

Yogurt

Yogurt is an excellent food for dieters because it has a good blend of carbohydrates and protein, which can help you feel satisfied longer. When choosing a yogurt, you should look for brands that are low in fat. Plain is the best option–the fruit varieties contain unnecessary sugars. You can add your own fruits to sweeten the yogurt up.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is high in fiber, which means that it can keep you feeling full until lunchtime. Rolled oats contain more fiber than the instant kind, which makes it a better choice, but if you’re short on time, you can eat instant oatmeal. You can also prepare rolled oats overnight in your slow cooker.

Lentils

Although all beans are a good food for dieters because they contain both protein and fiber, lentils reign supreme because of the high protein content. Additionally, they are easy to cook because they don’t require overnight soaking. Simply add them to soups or stews for a protein boost. You can also add to spaghetti sauce to add a vegetarian protein source to the dish.

Salads

Salads–when you make smart choices–can help you to fill up for very little calories. Fill up your plate with raw vegetables, and add a protein, such as tuna or beans, for a low-calorie lunchtime meal. You need to be careful about your choice of dressing though–many are high in calories, especially if you don’t measure the amount you put on.

Steak

The protein in steak can help you to maintain your muscle while you are losing weight. You can grill a steak on its own, serving it alongside low-calorie options such as steamed green beans or a salad, or add it to foods such as fajitas.
