Good Tips for Healthy Hair

Although beauty may be only skin deep, healthy hair can make you feel confident, attractive and desirable. Like many women, you’ve probably experienced your fair share of bad hair days. Going out in public with misbehaving hair can put a damper on your day. According to the University of Kentucky’s Cooperative Extension Service, the number one beauty complaint of women involves hair that is difficult to handle. Creating a healthy mane of hair requires little effort and can provide a boost to your spirits and to your self-esteem.

Clean Carefully

Like many women, you may find yourself overwhelmed by the vast selection of shampoos in your supermarket’s aisles. Choose your shampoo, according to your hair type. If you perm or color your locks, use a shampoo formulated for chemically treated hair. Likewise, if you have a head of thin hair or a frizzy mane, choose a shampoo that contains ingredients designed to treat your specific condition. Wash gently and rinse thoroughly. Use lukewarm water to avoid irritating your scalp or damaging your hair.

Create Fullness

Many women equate thick hair with healthy hair. If your locks appear limp and thin, try boosting the fullness of your mane. Change the location of your part from time to time and toss your hair upside down when blow drying.

Deep Condition

Apply a product designed to hydrate your hair. A deep conditioner can help replace moisture loss caused by styling tools, swimming and exposure to sun and wind. Use a deep conditioner about once a week to improve the health of your hair. Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of the product.

Turn Down the Heat

Heat styling appliances can damage the health of your hair. Whenever possible, allow your hair to dry naturally. If you must heat up your hair, protect it by applying a styling product designed to shield your hair from damaging heat. Adjust the temperature of your blow dryer, curling iron and flat iron to a low setting.

Overall Health

Like your skin, your hair can reflect your overall health. Not only will good nutrition encourage good health, it can help keep your hair looking its best. Promote healthy hair by consuming a well-balanced diet. Get plenty of exercise, sufficient sleep and consume adequate amounts of water.
