Home Remedies for Lack of Sex Drive

July 27, 2010 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

Many things can affect your sense of well-being and your relationship with your significant other. A low sex drive, also known as low libido, may cause concern, especially if you normally look forward to sexual activities. However, many men and women experience regular fluctuations in their sex drives. Illnesses, medications, hormonal changes and fatigue can all cause a decrease in your desire for sex. Although some cases of reduced libido require professional help, many situations respond well to home remedies.

Take Time to Talk

Although this may seem simple, you may have a difficult time finding the time to talk to your partner. The Mayo Clinic advises that communicating in an open and honest manner can promote a stronger emotional connection, leading to better sex. Set aside regular times to talk about things that you care about, including your sex life. Discuss your likes and dislikes and suggest ways you can both be more intimate.

Exercise

Get in better physical shape by taking up strength training or aerobic exercise. These activities can elevate your mood and increase your sex drive, as well as improve yourself image and boost your mood. Include Kegel exercises into your regular routine. Perform this exercise by tightening the muscles that you use to stop the flow of urine. Hold the squeeze for about five seconds, releasing and repeating several times during the day. These pelvic muscle exercises may help you increase your awareness of the muscles that provide pleasurable sexual sensations.

Eat the Right Foods

According to Caring Medical, a medical and rehabilitation clinic in Illinois, certain nutrients may help increase your desire for sex. These important elements can boost the health of your adrenal glands. These glands are responsible for producing some of your sex hormones. Consume foods that contain vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C and vitamin E, as well as choices that supply niacin, folic acid, selenium and zinc. Good sources of these elements include sweet potatoes, broccoli, lean meats, fruits, leafy vegetables and whole grains. Avoid elements that can lower your sex drive, such as nicotine, alcohol and caffeine.

Learn to Relax

Stress can reduce your libido, making it difficult to desire or enjoy sexual activities. Acknowledge sources of stress and eliminate unnecessary ones from your life. Help yourself relax by doing things that take your mind off your problems and lift your spirits. Enjoy daily walks, meditation, massage or yoga.
