The Best Stay-at-Home Mom Jobs

October 29, 2010 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

For many stay-at-home moms, working from home is the best of both worlds. Working from home allows moms to work their schedule around their children’s schedules and often eliminates the need and cost of childcare. Many stay-at-home moms want to work and contribute to their family’s income. Working from home allows them to do that. While many work-from-home job opportunities are fraudulent, there are some legitimate work-from-home opportunities. The best stay-at-home mom jobs offer tons of flexibility and an opportunity to earn a steady paycheck.

Childcare Provider

Working as a home-based childcare provider is a popular choice for stay-at-home moms. In addition to being experienced caregivers, many stay-at-home moms have a genuine love of caring for children. Providing childcare in your own home allows you to be your own boss, set your own schedule and establish your own fees. If you are considering caring for children in your home, it’s important to research the regulations and laws that govern childcare providers in your state. Some states require you to have a license if you care for a certain number of children in your home; others do not.

Freelancer

If you have a skill, you can likely sell it as a freelancer. In your pre-mom life, consider what skills and jobs you’ve had. Stay-at-home moms can work as freelance writers, editors, consultants and administrators. Stay-at-home moms can be hired to perform clerical work, medical billing, counseling and other services as freelancers from home if they have the proper background and experience.

Entrepreneur

Starting a small home-based business is an attractive option for some work-at-home moms. For stay-at-home moms who are crafty, many websites provide an outlet for selling handmade goods. From hair bows to crib bedding, stay-at-home moms have started their own businesses selling the products they make. If you have a set of skills and a business idea, consider starting a home-based business. For example, seamstress businesses, baking businesses and website design businesses can be easily operated from home.

Direct Sales

From Avon to The Pampered Chef, direct sales companies provide a viable source of income for stay-at-home moms. In fact, in 2009 alone, 16.1 million direct sellers sold more than $28 billion in retail sales. Direct sales allow stay-at-home moms to work when it is convenient for them. While there is usually a small investment required to get started, stay-at-home moms can earn a steady income, selling products and hosting sales parties for the company they represent. Stay-at-home moms can book parties around their children’s schedules and host as many or as few parties as they’d like.
