Once the baby-naming pressure begins, parents-to-be weigh their options, considering family and friends' names, the names of their favorite celebrities, historical figures, book characters, religion-based names and names that reflect their cultural heritages. As you select names for your baby, pay particular attention to the definitions of each name you examine.

Ava, a baby name that appears on many top girl names lists, is of German origin. BabyCenter, an online resource for parenting, cites "like a bird" as the meaning of the name Ava.

Ameerah

Ameerah is a female name, also listed as Amira or Amirah. It has Arabic, Swahili and Hebrew origins. Ameerah means princess in Arabic and Swahili, and it means speech in Hebrew. Arabic origin also recognizes the name as meaning "prosperous."

Isabella

Isabella is a popular girl's name shared by actresses, queens and princesses and is even used in classic literature titles, such as "Wuthering Heights," "Measure for Measure" and "Northanger Abbey." Baby Names World, an online baby naming resource, notes that Isabella is used in Dutch-, English-, Italian- and Spanish-speaking countries. The name means "my God is a vow."

Alexander

Alexander is a popular boy's name of Greek origin. It means "defending men." Baby Names World reports that the name Alexander, which appears in the Bible, is used in Dutch-, English-, German-, Hungarian- and Slovak-speaking countries.

Aiden

Aiden, also spelled Aidan, Ayden or Aydan, is a popular boy's name, which means "little fire." Baby Names World lists Aiden as a name of English origin, typically used in English-speaking countries. In 2006, Aiden was the most popular name for U.S. boys.

Liam

Of German and Hebrew origin, the name Liam has several meanings including "will," "desire" and "helmet," "protection" and "my people; I have a nation." Primarily used in English-speaking countries, the name Liam is sometimes short for William.

Riley

Riley is regarded as a popular unisex name of English origin. The name is thought to mean "courageous," as well as "rye field." While the name meaning may seem odd upon first glance, Baby Namespedia, an online resource for baby naming, notes that the name meaning come from the surname itself with "ryge" as "rye" and "leah" meaning "wood," "clearing" or "meadow."
