Eat This Not That!

blog post photoWhile my goals are to eat healthier and exercise, I know it is important for my kids to understand why mom is “bugging” them about what they are eating.  I have a pretty good sense of what foods I choose to buy for my family at the grocery store but when it comes to eating out, I often feel like I’m at the mercy of the restaurants.  How much butter is really in those mashed potatoes?  The chicken might not be fried, but pan sautéed in how much oil?  As far as ice cream and treats- which is the lesser of the evils?

Well, I grabbed this book at the bookstore last week and my kids have really gotten into reading it (and I’ve learned a ton too!) It is called Eat This- Not That- For Kids.  It teaches us all to choose healthy food items in restaurants when we dine out.  What to order and most of all- what NOT to order off the menu.  From appetizers and salads to main courses and desserts- this book lists the name of the restaurant (fast food or sit down) and lists calories, fat and sodium for a few target items.  A market list for the grocery store is also included showing things like, soups, pastas, chips, crackers and more.  Tweaking our eating habits just a bit will be simple now that we are armed with the info!  Great book and a great way to start off the new year making smarter choices.
