Exercising While Sick

October 15, 2009 by Autumn Calabrese Leave a Comment

So I am feeling a little under the weather today and I am scheduled to take a Pilates class at 10am.  I am debating on wether or not I should go.  The question is “How sick is to sick to workout?”  I have a lot of clients who are very dedicated to their fitness program and who don’t like to let ANYTHING get in the way of that….not even being sick.  I always tell them you get more from resting and letting your body heel then you do pushing through a workout that you are just not up for.   If you have a fever, cough, nausea or body aches it is a good idea to take the day off.  If you are just not feeling 100% but would like to do something try changing it up a bit.  If your a runner go for a walk, if you normally do 60 minutes of cardio try doing only 30 minutes.  This way you still get a workout in but you are not pushing yourself to the limit.  I am not feeling 100% today but I don’t have a fever, cough or any other symptoms that are knocking me down and out for the day.  That being said I am going to attempt my Pilates class.  The teacher is supposed to be hard but I will modify if I need to.  Stay healthy, wash your hands, drink plenty of water and get your rest.  All are important ports that work together for you staying healthy and happy especially during cold and flu season.
