Angelina Jolie: The New Disney Villain?

Earlier this week, news broke that Disney is creating a live action version of the 50-year-old classic, Sleeping Beauty. The movie would be told from the perspective of Maleficent, the evil fairy Godmother in the original film (much like the hit Broadway show Wicked).

According to the Los Angeles Times, Both Tim Burton and Angelina Jolie have been contacted and show interest in the project. The Times reports that Jolie is “very keen” on the idea. Would her involvement in the project be contingent on Burton moving forward with the movie?

Jolie has not done many childrens’ movies.  I wonder
how kid appropriate this tale of a villain will be? As the Times notes, casting Jolie in this role could widen audiences immensely. It would bring more adults (especially men) into the theatre. Personally, I think Jolie could do a great job creating the live action Sleeping Beauty villain.

As of yet, no deals have been signed, and Disney has made no comment.

Burton’s newly released Alice and Wonderland is drawing huge crowds. It beat Avatar’s opening weekend by $30 million! It drew $116.3 million its first three days in theatres.
