Neil Patrick Harris Provides Breastmilk for Daughter

December 21, 2010 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

Neil Patrick Harris and partner David Burtka couldn’t figure out why their 9-week-old daughter Harper was having intestinal issues.

“Harper was very fussy…she was always in a state of angst,” Neil shares during a recent visit to the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

Then, the couple, also fathers to Harper’s fraternal twin brother Gideon, realized their daughter’s system couldn’t handle formula and that she needed breast milk.

Neil joked that he and his partner tried to produce the milk themselves but “nothing happened.”

“So we switched formulas a couple of times and now we’re having to have breastmilk brought in,” Neil reveals.

The couple now gets breast milk shipped to them from a milk bank and Harper’s feeling so much better! “You have to have breastmilk shipped in. I think it’s a racket,” he explains the process. “Seriously, if someone is in Santa Monica – down the street and wants to provide milk – it has to go on a plane to San Jose and get fertilized and pasteurized and boiled and whatever happens in little bottles.”

Luckily, Neil is the star of the hit TV show ‘How I Met Your Mother’ because breast milk comes at quite a price! “They charge a fortune! It cost more for breastmilk than sushi!” he laughs.
