Weight Camps for Kids

December 10, 2010 by ds_65371 Leave a Comment

For some kids, summer proves a tempting time to reshape themselves physically. If your child has packed on some pounds as he has grown, participation in a weight camp may be beneficial. Many camps around the country are designed to help your child not only modify what he looks like on the outside, but also to help him deal with the issues that got him to his current weight to begin with.

New Image Camps

New Image Camps operates two facilities within the New Jersey area. Each camp is situated on lakefront property and features amenities, such as workout rooms and a swimming pool. The camps are open to children from ages 7 to 19. Boy and girl campers are housed separately, but they work toward their weight-loss goals together. Each camp boasts a small camper-to-counselor ratio, ensuring individualized attention. The New Image Camp philosophy is to build self-esteem in campers while giving them the tools they need to get and stay fit. By focusing on the mental aspects of being overweight, these camps aim to not only change your child’s outside, but also to give him something that may make him view himself more positively in the future.

Camp Kingsmont

Camp Kingsmont was established in 1967 and has been a Virginia summer tradition since. This camp is coed, open to children between the ages of 10 and 18. Each summer, Kingsmont offers up to eight weeks of programing, designed to teach children to build and maintain physical fitness. Campers may participate in the entire eight weeks, or less-intensive sessions of two- to seven- weeks each. Not only do campers have the opportunity to participate in a host of physical activities on-site, the camp also takes campers on off-site trips regularly, helping to maintain focus and excitement from summer’s start to finish.

Camp Jump Start

Missouri’s Camp Jump Start is a healthcare professional-operated camp that aims to empower campers to make healthy decisions and educate them on the role that diet and exercise plays in their weight. This coed camp is open to campers between the ages of 9 and 17, and claims to have a 100 percent weight-loss success rate. Campers at Camp Jump Start don’t just learn about diet and exercise, they also participate in behavior modification programs, stress management programs, family intervention training and many other programs not commonly seen at other weight-loss camps.
