Despite the complicated circumstances, Simon Cowell says he’s feeling good about fatherhood.
In an interview with the BBC, The X Factor judge opened up about the news that he is expecting a child with Lauren Silverman, the wife of Cowell’s friend Andrew Silverman.
“I’m proud to be a dad,” the 53-year-old told reporters. “It’s something I hadn’t thought of before, but now I know I feel good about it.”
Silverman is currently estranged from her husband and is in the process of working out a divorce settlement.
As a result, Cowell is keeping his distance from his baby mama for the time being. He said that he “won’t see Lauren in person until things calm down.”
The music mogul has been forthright in the past about not wanting kids. “”God, no, I couldn’t have children,” he told PEOPLE in 2009. “If I had them here drawing on the walls I’d go nuts. You’ve got to be up at a certain time. Got to listen when all you want to do is sit in a corner thinking.”
Luckily, it looks like he’s had a change of heart about the matter. When talking to the BBC, he had only positive things to say about the situation – “things are changing in my life right now, for the better.”
