Pink’s Teaching Moment in Acceptance Speech at VMAs Blew Us Away

I’ll never forget the fist time I saw Pink perform. It was at a Jezebel Magazine party in Atlanta in 2000-something during the hey-day of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. LA Reid (Baby Face back then) was guiding Pink’s career at the time and he had her producing songs like Most Girls and You Make Me Sick to fit that Christina Aguilera pop-icon mold.

But if Alicia Moore aka Pink has demonstrated anything over the years, it’s that she does not “fit the mold” and for that we are grateful. Somehow she broke free of those pop demands that weren’t quite Alicia and fought for her artistic expression. If she hadn’t we would have missed out on soulful rock ballads like Just Like a Pill and Just Give Me a Reason leaving us to truly ask “What About Us?

Last night after an incredible performance of a medley of her hits, she received a much deserved VMA Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. And in true Pink fashion, took the moment in her acceptance speech to remind all of us, through the eyes of her daughter, that we are all unique and it’s our differences that make us beautiful.

Watch her acceptance speech here and her daughter’s face as she states, yet again, why its important to be yourself. Truly inspiring.
