Ways to Heal Acne Scars

January 5, 2011 by ds_65371 Leave a Comment

Individuals who suffer from acne don’t only have to worry about their blemishes, but also the scars blemishes may leave behind. If past acne struggles have left you with skin that isn’t as smooth as you would like, you might be able to remedy this problem. Select a scar healing method that works to eradicate heartbreaking acne reminders.

Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing is an acne scar removal treatment option that dermatologists perform. This treatment consists of using a laser to remove the top layer of skin, allowing new, unscarred skin to take its place. Depending on the severity of your scarring, this procedure could take anywhere from several minutes to an hour. Because the process can be relatively painful, doctors often use a local anesthetic before preforming the resurfacing. After laser resurfacing, you can expect your skin to heal in three to 10 days, reports WebMD.

Fractional Laser Therapy

Fractional laser therapy is less painful and invasive than laser resurfacing. This procedure involves using a laser to penetrate the skin, targeting skin that is below this top layer in an attempt to reduce acne-related bumpiness. As Acne.org reports, results of this treatment are generally less impressive than results of more invasive options, but the healing time is also significantly less. Individuals who receive this treatment merely look as if they’ve received a sunburn. If you opt for this treatment, you can expect to receive four to five treatments before you achieve the desired results.

Dermabrasion

Unlike many other acne scar removal options, dermabrasion treatments do not depend upon the use of lasers. The process of dermabrasion involves using a wire brush or diamond instrument to abrade the skin’s surface. Just like with laser resurfacing, the thought behind this process is that a new skin layer will grow to replace the damaged skin. This treatment is not ideal for treating severe scars, but instead, is most appropriate for superficial scars, reports Acne.org. After dermabrasion, you can expect to see renewed skin between 10 days and three weeks, according to KidsHealth.

Injection Therapy

If past acne outbreaks have left you with deep, rolling scars, you may be able to reduce these flaws with injection therapy. When performing this therapy, doctors inject a filler under your skin similar to that used for plumping lips and reducing wrinkles. This filler raises the lower levels of your rolling scars, giving you more smooth and even skin.
