How to Decorate Potted Plants

Sometimes nature itself produces the most beautiful decorating items, such as flowers. But sometimes when you put those beauties in a plain pot, their colors and vibrancy dulls. Give your flowers or potted plant a little boost by decorating the pot. Add some color and charm by coordinating with the natural colors bursting forth from your plant. Choose paints and ribbons in matching colors or neutrals, such as white or black.

Step 1

Lay newspapers or another protective covering on the table or floor where you want to work. This will protect the area from paint and scratches, as you move your pot around. If you don’t have newspaper, use butcher paper, wax paper, brown paper bags or plastic trash bags.

Step 2

Dip a foam brush into your latex paint, and paint the sides and rim of your pot. Let it dry for 15 to 30 minutes, and reapply another coat of paint, if necessary. Leave your pot on the newspaper overnight to dry completely.

Step 3

Apply a stream of glue along one end of a crepe paper streamer, and wrap it around the middle of a pot. Cut the paper so it overlaps itself by an inch and glues to itself.

Step 4

Wrap ribbon around your pot, in the middle of the crepe streamer. Leave about 2 to 4 inches of tail. Tie a bow or square knot to secure the ribbon around your pot.
