In a moment of weakness, you’ve given in to what seems like the millionth request from your kids to get a dog. Now that you’ve made the promise, you need to do some research about dogs because some breeds are better for children than others. No matter which breed you select, you should always supervise dogs and young children when they are together.

My daughter Ava and I have started a new tradition: every once in a while, we like to visit the kitties at the Humane Society. My girlfriends think Im crazy. Doesnt it break your heart? they ask. Im a little embarrassed to admit that it doesnt. I see the cats lounging in their semi-private studio apartments with wall-to-wall blanketing. Sure, theyre imprisoned, but this is hardly San Quentin. Bleeding hearts ask how I can resist bringing one home.

Finding the best breed of bird for a child is not as important as determining whether your child is the type who would like a bird as a pet in the first place. Birds are sensitive and need caretakers who understand their ways. Most kids younger than 12 are probably not mature enough to understand the needs of a pet bird to care for it properly. There are always exceptions, though, and some kids are great with pet birds.

Pet accidents happen. It is a part of life for pet owners. Puppies and kittens take a while to get the hang of potty training, older pets have occasional accidents and upset tummies happen. Unfortunately, sometimes accidents occur on carpet, where they are difficult to remove. The object of cleaning is to remove not only stains but odor as well. It is best to clean pet stains early, while they are still fresh. Once the stains set, they are more difficult to remove. Older stains may require several cleaning attempts.
