5 Great Ways to Stay Cool in the Summer Heat

June 28, 2012 by Madison Pados Leave a Comment

It’s summer time, and that means the temperature is rising. It can get hot, hot, hot!

But fear not! With a little planning (and maybe some ice cubes) you can stay cool even when the temperature rises. Here are five ways to beat the heat this summer:

Dress for Success

If you want to look (and feel) cool even on the hottest days, you need to start with the right outfit. Ditch the dark colors and stick with loose-fitting, light-weight fabrics. Cotton is always great choice because it absorbs the body’s perspiration and wicks moisture away from the skin. Top it all off with a wide-brimmed hat to provide some trendy and portable shade.

Eat Smart

Did you know that a cantaloupe is 95% water? Hit the grocery store and fill your fridge with fruits and veggies- not only are they good for you, but they’ll keep you hydrated and cool you down. Stay away from heavy meals, which are difficult to digest, causing your body to use more resources and heat up. And definitely avoid the big three dehydrators: caffeine, alcohol and salt.

Stay Hydrated

It may seem obvious, but during a heat wave, it’s all about the H2O. Always carry water with you, and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to start drinking. Keep skin cool and hydrated by using a spray mister throughout the day. They’re available at most drugstores or you can make your own by filling a small spray bottle with water.

Seek Out The Shade

Whenever possible, stay out of the sun! Spend a few hours in the refuge of an air-conditioned building by taking a trip to the library or catching an afternoon movie. For jogging junkies, try to plan exercise sessions in the morning or evening when it’s cooler. And if you do venture outside during the day, make sure to slather on the sunscreen!

Go Bare (From The Neck Up)

Your head and neck control a large portion of your body’s temperature, so if you pin your hair up and keep your neck bare, you’ll immediately feel cooler. Another option: wrap a wet bandanna like a headband around your hairline. Although you may have to deal with some frizz, you’ll feel as cool as a cucumber.
