How to Fade Hair Color Quickly

Hair dye has revolutionized personal style for women around the globe. Blondes can transform into ravishing redheads, and brunettes can become platinum with just a little time and effort. Occasionally, dye is stronger than what might have been desired, making the need to fade hair color quickly extremely important. Fading hair color is not a difficult process, although it can be time consuming to complete properly.

How to Fade Hair Color Quickly

Step 1

Evaluate your hair color in natural light. Step outside on a sunny day to determine just how much you want to fade your hair. Artificial light reflects differently on your hair than natural light, and can give you a poor perception of your true hair color.

Step 2

Wash your hair frequently with a good quality shampoo. The more often you wash your hair, the quicker the color will fade. Washing your hair once in the morning and once in the evening will typically help your hair fade in just a few days. Be sure to avoid any shampoos designed to preserve hair color, as these will not fade your hair as effectively as a normal shampoo.

Step 3

Apply a rich conditioner to your hair after you shampoo. Frequent shampooing can be very drying, and can result in scales and flaking if moisture is not restored to the scalp. Let the conditioner sit on your scalp for five minutes before rinsing with a generous amount of warm water for best results.

Step 4

Sit in strong, direct sunlight to help fade your color. Sunlight is a very powerful element and can help to naturally fade your color without the use of harsh chemicals. Take care to use a sunscreen with at least 15 SPF on your skin to avoid burning while you sit in the sun.

Step 5

Scrub your hair with liquid dish soap to pull color out of your hair. Dish soap will help fade hair color quickly due to high sulfate levels, so a good washing with dish soap can help remove excess hair dye quickly.

Step 6

Rinse your hair with plain vinegar as a last resort if your hair color is still too strong. Vinegar is acidic and can help strip dye from your colored hair if used correctly. Apply enough vinegar to thoroughly soak your hair, and allow to sit for two or three minutes; then, rinse with liberal amounts of warm water. Repeat this process as necessary to achieve the proper tone.

Step 7

Coat your hair with a hot-oil treatment once you have reached the desired amount of fading in your hair. The hot oil will penetrate the scalp and hair strands to restore shine and softness to your perfectly faded hair color.

Warnings

  • Do not use any chemicals not approved for use on humans. Certain products can cause severe injury if used inappropriately.
