How To Fuel Your Young Athlete

Sports dominate our lives. My kids are either playing sports or they are watching it. Almost every night we are driving to practice and every weekend we are driving to a tournament, scrimmage or league game. Most frequently my husband is heading in one direction with one of the kids and I’m heading an hour the opposite way with the other.

More often than not, we are rushing from one game to another and need to have a plan for food and drinks because there often isn’t time to grab food and the drinks and snacks that are offered at the fields tend to be unhealthy. So you definitely should bring a cooler – I love the soft kind because it is so much lighter than the traditional ones – and pack your own snacks and drinks. Also, it’s super important what your child eats for breakfast that morning and the night before. Here are some ideas to help your child get the most out of his or her game.

Dinner (the night before):

Chicken, steak, pasta, rice, potatoes, vegetables are all good. NO fried food.

Breakfast:

Cereal with fiber and protein. Cereal that is brightly colored or chocolate is not a good option. Wheat toast, wheat bagels, lots of water and fruit.

In between games:
• Fruit, fruit and more fruit. Nothing tastes better than a cold orange slice or crisp watermelon after a long hot game.
• Homemade sandwiches with whole wheat bread.
• Protein bars or cereal bars.
• No pizza, burgers, fries, fried food and definitely no soda.

Hydrate. The most important thing to remember is that your child needs to be hydrated. We love BODYARMOR because it’s a natural sports drink that contains no artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners. It uses potassium as a source of electrolytes, not sodium like traditional sports drinks and is made with 10% coconut water to provide superior hydration. Your kids will love BODYARMOR’s 7 great-tasting flavors including: Fruit Punch, Orange Mango, Strawberry Banana, Tropical Punch, Lemon Lime, Mixed Berry and Grape and can be found in the sports drink aisle of your local Target.

And now, BODYARMOR natural sports drink is giving you a chance to win a $500 gift card and a 6 month supply of BODYARMOR natural sports drink. To enter and learn more, click here.
