Taking Child Bullying From “Hit Me” to “Hug Me”

My sixth grade teacher taught me a most invaluable lesson when she said, Cynthia, you need to grow thicker skin. I was a super sensitive kid and really needed to stop letting everything affect me so deeply. My knee jerk response was to sway to the other side of the pendulum, testing my forte at being a bitch and wearing impenetrable armor. My shield became so fortified by 8th grade that you couldnt even ask me for a piece of gum. It took me time to work out the proper balance, but I still get hit with zingers. We all do.

Our Kid’s Education Doesn’t Stop When the Bell Rings

Time flies so fast. I have been out of school for 10+ years and still get back to school jitters. I have children who are now in school. I learn so much from watching my kids learn and grow. At each stage of their journey, you both gain and lose something. My son is definitely not a baby anymore; he suddenly transitioned into a little boy. While I miss my little mushy baby, I adore the little man now standing before me with his unique vernacular. With his backpack ready to take on the world, Im already wondering where the past 4 years went. As he heads off to school, I pray and wonder, how can I help? How can I guide him? Sometimes I feel so lost in how to direct him to his next steps.

Dr. Mom to the Rescue!

When it comes to my kids health, I find the revolutionary pearl stated by Dr. Benjamin Spock to moms of you know more than you think you do reassuring, if not pressure-inducing. Your childs health is your responsibility. In this regard, moms need to morph into hawks. Its an unwritten rule that when you give birth, you take a short form of the Hippocratic Oath to care for your children.

Escape & Educate with a Family Movie Night!

My grandmother loved the movies and found them to be poetry in motion. The medium was birthed in her lifetime and she loved it, soaked it up and enjoyed the off-screen drama of the movie stars. Weve shared many multi-generational conversations over films, which are immortal and transcendent. Todays world is much more celebrity and information obsessed but what I care about is the bonding that happens over media — movies, television, theater, music, dance, art I love it all! No matter what time of year, a movie night is special. Whether setting up at home for a movie night or going to the movies, theres nothing like it. Movies are timeless and the experience lives on well after the lights turn back on.

Summer is for Dining Al Fresco

While dining out one night at Mario Batalis Babbo, he said to me the pearl Crostada is Love. Yes, my friends, food is love, so serve it up!! Summer love can be found everywhere; in the flowers, in the air, in the water, all the elements. We are particularly lucky to be served up love by the earth with the bounty of food Mother Nature provides. In preparing for summer, I love planting with my children. We plant fresh herbs (although my sage is the lone survivor) and flowers (my sunflowers are late bloomers). With each dig into the soil, Im more amazed at how it all works. We put a seed into soil, add water, sunshine and it grows into something we can eat. Thats a simple recipe for success.
