The Back-to-School Shopping List That Actually Works
It starts in late July.
There’s still sunscreen on the counter and flip-flops under the couch, but I’m holding a pen and a school supply list. My youngest is sprawled across the floor coloring in last year’s notebook cover. My oldest asks if their calculator is “still SAT-approved.”
Every year, I think I’ve got it down. And every year, something surprises me.
A Conversation at the Kitchen Table
“I thought I had everything,” I tell my teen, scanning last fall’s receipts. “But why is there another list from your teacher?”
They shrug, “That’s just how it works.”
And it is. A mom on Reddit wrote:
It’s not just me.
So this year, I did it differently. I shopped a little smarter. I listened to other moms. I read reviews like it was my job. And I made a list that feels solid—tested, thoughtful, not wasteful.
What We Bought (and Why)
We started with the basics at Walmart—Pen+Gear 67-piece kit for under $10. Folders for a quarter. Glue sticks and Crayola packs for under a buck. It’s the kind of stuff you don’t think about, but teachers always ask for more of.
Then Staples for those items that actually need to last. I grabbed Five Star notebooks, plastic folders, and a pack of mechanical pencils with extra erasers—because those go fast.
Amazon filled in the gaps:
- A JanSport SuperBreak Backpack, because it lasted all last year and still zips up without a fight.
- A TI-84 Plus CE Calculator—yep, the SAT-approved one. It’s pricey, but we found a used one on Amazon and saved $40.
- An Owala FreeSip Water Bottle. Leak-proof, teen-approved, and somehow still in the backpack after last semester.
Costco gave us snacks. Dried mango. Granola bars. Fruit pouches. Enough to last two lunchbox cycles and then some.
And for my middle child who drags books like a miner’s cart? We ordered a J World Rolling Backpack. One mom said:
“My son has back issues. This changed everything. The wheels are smooth and it holds everything.”
Real Talk from Reddit Parents and Teens
From the parents:
“TI-84 is the calculator your kid will probably need by 10th grade. If you can find one used, even better.”

YOU DO NOT NEED TO SPEND $500 ON BACK TO SCHOOL CLOTHES.

What I’m Carrying Into This Year
We didn’t overspend. We didn’t panic. My kids each had a say—and I made sure what we bought would last at least until winter break.
No flash. No fluff. Just function and a little style.
So when that first day rolls around, I won’t be scrambling. I’ll be sipping coffee, labeling folders, and reminding myself… this might actually be enough.
And really, sometimes enough is exactly right.
