Although it may seem that the most popular video games out there are violent or focus on subjects that are not appropriate for children, in recent years, family-friendly games have become popular for systems, such as the PlayStation 2. According to "The Independent" newspaper, a majority of the best-selling games of 2009 were family-friendly. Family games are available for all game systems, even the PlayStation 2.

Function

The best family video games appeal to both children and adults. Like board games in earlier games, the best video games will let a family play together and learn together. Certain PS2 games, such as video game versions of classic board games, help a family to socialize and get to know each other. Other family games help improve problem solving skills or can help improve dexterity, such as "Dance Dance Revolution."

Types

There is a wide variety of family games for the PS2, some suitable for all ages and some good for families with slightly older children. For instance, games such as "Guitar Hero" or "Dance Dance Revolution" may be too difficult for very small children to play. Other games include puzzle games, such as "Bejeweled" or a Disney trivia game, which even young children can play.

Benefits

Many of the best family games take only a short time to play. Some video games consist of several mini-games that only take a few minutes. Such games are great for families with younger children, who may grow bored of the game quickly. Short games also encourage children to try other activities, such as playing outside after the video game finishes. Some family friendly PS2 games also get children out of their seats and encourage them to move around, such as "Dance Dance Revolution" or "Dance Factory."

Challenges

Even family-friendly games occasionally contain content that you may find inappropriate for your children. For instance, music and dance games may have songs that feature mild profanity. Some games may feature cartoon violence or references to alcohol. If anything of concern comes up while you are playing the games with your children, you can use the opportunity to have a discussion with them about the game's content. If you are playing a game that references a lot of name brands, you may want to talk to them about consumerism in modern society.

Cost of the Games

Video games are often expensive. Fortunately, PlayStation 2 games tend to be a bit cheaper than games for other platforms, since it is older. Many of the games are also available used, which reduces the price as well. Keep in mind that certain games require additional accessories, such as special controllers, which adds to the cost of the game. You will also have to find space to store extra controllers in your house.
