10 Ways To Celebrate Pi Day

March 14, 2013 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

What do you get when you take the sun and divide its circumference by its diameter? Pi in the sky.

Today is March 14th, and that means math fans around the world are celebrating Pi Day! (3.14, get it?)

Pi is an irrational and transcendental number, meaning it will continue infinitely without repeating.

According to the official Pi Day website, the mathematical constant that allows you to calculate the area inside a circle has now been calculated to over 1 trillion digits past the decimal.

True story: I went to a math and science charter high school, and every March 14th we went outside and stood on the football field in the formation of the symbol to take a photo for the yearbook. So you might say that Pi Day holds a special place in my heart.

Are you planning to celebrate? Here are some ideas:

1. Bake a Pi Day pie

2. Make your own “Pizza Pi” (Pizza Hut is also giving away 140 $10 gift cards between 1 and 4 pm CST to people using the hashtag #PizzaHutPiDay on Twitter)

3. Or how about a Chicken Pot Pi?

4. Put together a “Pi Day” lunch (with pi-neapples, pi-stachios and pi-ckles)

5. Have a “Life of Pi” movie night.
6. Sing along with The Pi Song:

7.  Write a Pi-ku. It’s a math version of the traditional 5-7-5 syllabic haiku. A Pi-ku of course, follows a 3-1-4 syllabic pattern.
For example:
Math is fun
When
Mixed with some pie

8. Take a picture of your clock at 1:59 pm (When it’s officially the most Pi minute of the day – 3.14159)

9. Tell a math joke. Buzzfeed has 25 Geeky Math Jokes to inspire you.

10. Healthy mind, healthy body. Get moving with this Easy as Pi Workout!
