The Dermalogica company began in 1986, but its real beginning was in 1983 when Jane Wurwand, a skin therapist from the UK, noticed that American skin and body therapy was lacking. Wurwand opened the International Dermal Institute for skin and body therapy training. As of 2010, IDI has 40 worldwide locations. After three years, Wurwand developed the Dermalogica product line.

Dermalogica products do not contain any irritants, such as lanolin, SD alcohol, mineral oil, fragrances or artificial colors. This company does not use animal testing to test its products. Part of buying Dermalogica products is the consultation you receive from an IDI-trained skin therapist. Called “face mapping,” this is Dermalogica’s special skin analysis procedure. A Dermalogica professional will divide your skin into zones and give you advice on the best way to care for the different areas of your skin.
You can start the face mapping process online by identifying which type of skin concern you have–oily, acne, skin aging, skin tone, sensitivity, dryness or shaving. Select one, and you will receive a brief explanation from an online talking avatar. After answering some questions, the online service will recommend products you might want. Dermalogica recommends you go into a brick-and-mortar store for a more complete analysis.
