Birthday Party Decorating Tips

When planning birthday party decorations, most people rely on the basics of balloons, streamers, a personalized cake and flowers. However, you can make your party decor stand out with a special theme, customized decorations, handmade embellishments or a decor that encourages interaction amongst your party guests. Before decking out your party space, consider the guest of honor’s personality and preferences, and center your theme around these.

Types

Birthday party decorations are not limited to party supply stores and packages. Anything can serve as a party decoration, from a bright swatch of fabric that creates a canopy in your garden to a bouquet of brilliant paper and silk lanterns shining over the table. Party themes may center around elements of pop culture, or they may incorporate international cities, hobbies, color combinations, natural settings or activities.

Features

Many party decorations serve a functional purpose as well. Decorated plates, cups and napkins are a classic, but you can create funkier versions by decoupaging images from magazines or photographs of the guest of honor onto plain paper items. Candles, luminarias, lanterns, tiki torches and strings of party lights set a festive tone. Embellish chairs and tables with ribbons, tassels or fake flowers.

Function

Your birthday party decorations should make the space feel singular and the guest of honor feel special. A personalized birthday banner, featuring artwork, signatures or photographs of party guests, makes an ideal keepsake. Hand out disposable cameras at the door and provide funky hats, flowered leis, fake tattoos or makeup for guests to make photo opportunities.

Considerations

Party decorations can do more than brighten the space. Select decorations that ramp up the fun quotient in the birthday party. For children, a pinata stuffed with candy or small toys fits the bill. For adults, a light-framed stage area with a karaoke machine enlivens a birthday party. A beach-theme party for children may have sand and water play areas while the same theme for adults may feature a sandy area for a limbo contest and beach volleyball.

Misconceptions

Birthday party decorations need not cost a great deal of money. Keep the look simple and streamlined with flowers gathered from your garden and candles flickering in the corners. Paint or collage birthday signs, place cards and invitations. Use embellishments, such as confetti, sequins or glitter, to give simple party hats, favor bags or table settings a lively look.
