Teen Haircut Styles

Teenagers like attention, which is why most of them try to experiment on different types of haircuts and hairstyles. Fortunately, styles vary from the simplistic to the adventurous. Whatever haircut the teen chooses, it should match her personality, mood or the occasion so that the style does not seem awkward or forced.

Emo Punk Hairstyle

The emo punk hairstyle is ideal for a teen girl who is adventurous, bold and nontraditional. It is not what you call sweet or tamed. The emo punk hairstyle can be any type of hair length; however, it is best on darker hair such as black or dark brown.

Emo started out as a short word for “emotional”; however, nowadays it also describes clothing, hair, accessories and makeup styles. Donning emo hairstyles is just one way teenagers can express their emotions to show individual styles that do not conform to the norm. Combined with a punk hairstyle, which is another form of self-expression hairstyle, emo can be defiant.

To achieve an emo punk look, start with a layered, uneven cut. The bangs are long, often side-swept with some part of the eyes covered. Adding spikes styled with mousse gives the punk appearance. Adding white highlights or hair dyes such as fuchsia, purple or blue adds visual appeal.

Bob Cut Hairstyles

Bob cut hairstyles can be with or without fringes or bangs; they can also be straight or wavy. A conservative teenager can style her hair with the classic bob cut, which is straight and sleek with the ends of the hair at the same level as her chin. Add pizazz by flipping out the ends of a straight bob cut to give it a flipped-out style. Apply firm hold spray to let the flip stay on longer.

To make a bob cut flirty and more voluminous, add waves using curlers or a curling iron. Tousle the hair with some mousse for more bounce. Selena Gomez had a wavy bob hairstyle when she attended the Women in Film 2009 Crystal and Lucy Awards. She was 17 at the time.

Another variation is the inverted bob cut with the back shorter than the front. The back shows the back of the neck while the front hair reaches the chin. Parted in the middle or one side, the inverted bob cut looks sophisticated.

Long Wavy Hairstyle

Miley Cyrus styles her long hair in many different ways, but often she has a long wavy hairstyle. Using a 2- to 3-inch barrel curling iron to apply loose curls on each 2-inch section of hair helps create the wavy look. Wind each section with a curling iron, and hold it with heat for 15 to 20 seconds. The longer you keep the curling iron on hair, the curlier the hair becomes. Prior to using the curling iron, apply styling mousse on the hair and remove knots and tangles by brushing thoroughly.
