Teen Clothing Styles

Teen clothing offers many options for carving out an identity, expressing individual style or just updating your look. Browse through catalogs, boutiques, magazines and images of your favorite teen celebrities to get a sense of what looks the new season brings. In general, teen fashion trends change quickly, so sticking with some adaptable basics and then updating with funky trims and cool accessories can give a teenager’s style an inexpensive and easy update.

Urban Style

Urban style and street chic inspire many teenage fashionistas. Denim always works in this look, either dark washed skinny jeans or vintage washed and distressed bootleg jeans for a touch of flair. A fitted T-shirt keeps the look contemporary. Add some urban funk with a faux fur vest or hat in a bright color, such as indigo or peacock. Go glam with silver metallic details on shoes, bags or belts, or strike a cool cowboy look with a leather western hat. Layer a few tight T-shirts in complementary colors for a quick style update.

Punk Style

The punk look may mean the Johnny Rotten’s retro style of ripped shirts and safety pins, or a more updated version such as Lady Gaga’s curve-hugging neon pleather skirts draped in chains. You can never go wrong with basic black and, when paired with black, you have the Goth look. A classic punk accessory is the black leather belt, choker or bracelet, lined with metal studs or spikes. Black leather also works for jackets, which sometimes have band logos or painted designs on the back, and shoes or round-toe boots. Finish the look with a stripe of color in the hair.

Bohemian Modern Style

Update the hippie look of the 1960s with bohemian modern teen fashion. This approach borrows from ethnic clothing styles from around the world, such as Indian beaded saris, Mexican ponchos or western boots. Layering works well, so try a long tunic over a broomstick skirt, and add a scarf, shawl or poncho in cool weather. Bright, patterned or textured tights and boots add color in winter, while warmer months mean beaded sandals. Simple jeans get a bohemian modern update with patches, fringe or cuffs trimmed in patterned ribbon. Accessorize outfits with beaded jewelry, stacks of bracelets, hemp woven belts or a floppy hat.
