Cool Learning Games for Kids

August 23, 2010 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

Games are a cool way to teach kids important lessons. While some games provide fun pastimes, others incorporate educational activities that impart knowledge. While many kids learn quickly and easily using structured methods, such as classroom settings and textbooks, others glean important facts through fun activities. Consider your children’s age, level of understanding, favorite activities and talents to determine the best games for your kids. Encourage your kids to enjoy learning, by incorporating educational games and activities into their daily lives.

Considerations

Select fun educational games by considering your kids’ interests and skills. Games that require many individuals can provide social interaction and important feedback, while solitary games promote uninterrupted thought and encourage your children to develop their own, individual learning styles.

Desired Outcome

Choose educational games that encourage knowledge of certain subjects. For instance, if you want to teach a young child to count, play games with dice or number cards. Cool science games encourage hands-on learning through experiments and observations.

Competition

Many educational games appeal to your kids’ desire to compete and excel. These types of educational games can help build your child’s self-esteem, while group games can encourage team building and a willingness to take turns and encourage others to succeed. Video games help children develop strategic skills and good hand-eye coordination.

Age

Choose cool games by fitting them to your child’s age. Depending on their stage of development, many kids like doing the same things as their peer group. Games not matched to the right age group, for example, seldom appeal to a child’s sense of fun. On the other hand, difficult games can cause frustration, and the desire to quit playing.

Building Awareness

Cool learning games provide a fun way to teach your children about issues that affect their daily lives. Health and nutritional games can encourage in-depth lessons regarding diet and weight, while recycling games may create a desire to reduce waste and pollution. Religious games can help you share your spiritual beliefs with your child, while encouraging discussions and questions.
