Herbs to Increase the Sex Drive in Women

September 28, 2010 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

For centuries, Chinese and Brazilian herbal medicine have revered several types of natural remedies designed to boost female sexuality, according to both MedlinePlus and Discovery Health. While no herb is a guaranteed cure-all for sexual difficulties, sometimes drinking a cup of tea with a special remedy can enhance the blood flow to all parts of the body and increase sexual sensations and desire. But keep in mind that pregnant women, nursing mothers and women taking medication should not ingest herbs without talking to a doctor first.

Yohimbe

Yohimbe, a traditional African herbal remedy, helps increase sexual desire in women as well as men, according to “Hilary Magazine.” More than 30 reputable scientific articles have lauded yohimbe as a potent and usually safe sexual herb. Women hoping to zest up their bedroom activities can take yohimbe as pills or brew some tea.

Ginseng

Ginseng, marketed under a wide variety of formulations, may help some women reclaim their mojo, notes MedlinePlus. This ancient herb can also potentially help postmenopausal women get back their sexual energy and may possibly alleviate symptoms of other conditions such as male infertility, fatigue and type 2 diabetes. The most commonly used varieties of ginseng are Chinese and American; Chinese medical use of ginseng dates back at least 2,000 years.

Gingko Biloba

Gingko biloba may help treat female sexual dysfunction, according to the “U.S. News and World Report.” But like any other herbal remedy, keep in mind that ginkgo biloba may not send you and your partner racing to the bedroom. Also, this herb should not be ingested if you’re taking blood thinners. Gingko supplements can also potentially alleviate premenstrual symptoms, notes the Mayo Clinic.

Catuaba and Muirapuama

Catuaba and muirapuama, South American plants, are possible natural sexual remedies for ladies and gentlemen alike, notes Discovery Health. The plants reportedly increase libido and sexual function. Catuaba and muirapuama herbs are served throughout the Amazon in fruit smoothies, though people living in North America will probably need to find supplements in a health food store.

Guarana

Guarana is a South American plant consisting of lots of caffeine and is also widely served through Brazil and neighboring countries as “aphrodisiac drinks,” according to Discovery Health. Women as well as men can potentially benefit from “super sex drinks” containing guarana; this herb is also sold primarily in health food stores in pill form through the United States and Canada.
