Healthy Snack Foods on the Go

September 28, 2010 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

Many busy moms allow their always-on-the-go ways to lead them to fill their hungry bellies with foods that, while quick, may not be the most nutritionally sound. Just because you don’t have time to stop and cook doesn’t mean that you can’t maintain a healthy diet. There are a wide array of snacks that are both palate-pleasing and nutritious. Instead of picking up another bag of chips or snacking on a candy bar, try a healthy choice to keep you satisfied between meals.

String Cheese

String cheese is a nutritious food. This tasty treat often comes individually wrapped, allowing you to tuck one away in your bag on your way out the door. The calcium found in this food makes it a wise choice, particularly for women who require more calcium than men to ensure bone health.

Chocolate-Covered Pretzels

Chocolate-covered pretzels have the sweet appeal of a candy bar without the diet-busting calories and fat. This snack option offers the added benefit of combining salty and sweet. Purchase small packs of them so you can grab one and go, or make your own serving-size packages by putting a serving into a resealable plastic bag.

Whole Wheat Bagel

Whole wheat foods are more filling than the bleached flour alternatives. Snacking on half a whole wheat bagel with reduced-fat cream cheese or sugar-free jelly is an easy way to fill your stomach between meals. This snack option is a particularly good choice if you have a long time before your next meal.

Fruit and Yogurt Parfait

Fruit and yogurt parfaits are creamy, cool and delicious. This snack option mixes healthy fruit with yogurt to create a snack that is low in calories and fat. Create your own fruit and yogurt parfaits by dividing fat-free vanilla yogurt into small portion cups and topping it with fresh or frozen fruit. You can also purchase pre-made parfaits, available at many grocery stores and an assortment of fast food restaurants.

Baby Carrots

Baby carrots are a nutritious snack that is perfect for on-the-go eating. These tiny veggies often come pre-washed, allowing you to simply dump them into a sandwich bag and tote them with you to work or while running errands. They are also rich in beta carotene, which promotes overall body health.
