New Year’s Eve Decorating Ideas

Greet the New Year with a fun-filled party! Because what better way to celebrate New Year’s Eve than with good company, good food and good drinks?

Set the stage by designing your space with some festive and fun accents. Complementing your party with the right decorations will create the right mood for the occasion and add an extra sparkle to your event!

High-Tech Design

Nobody knows exactly what the new year will bring, but it’s safe to say that new technology will be part of it. Decorate with accessories, poster-size photos and props that depict the evolution of technology. From old computers, televisions and rotary telephones to laptops, satellite dishes and cell phones, remind your guests how far technology has come. Use lamps with colorful LEDs to light your space. Hanging LED rope lights below the ceiling moldings will add brightness to the occasion. An LED micro reader board — along with a hologram of the New York Times Square ball dropping — will make your New Year’s Day countdown visually tech-savvy. Hang blank CDs using metallic ribbons. The CDs will reflect the lights and create party ambiance. Using accessories with bright and metallic colors will make the look more modern and futuristic. For example, placing hot pink and silver decorative pillows on couches and using metallic table runners will complement a high-tech design theme. Finally, use a projector to show images of fireworks on the wall.

Old Hollywood Theme Decorations

Old Hollywood style is glamorous and can add glitz to your New Year’s Eve event. Adding lots of bling will help depict this golden era, when stars like Rita Hayworth, Cary Grant, Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby walked the red carpet. Hang pinups of the stars of yesteryear, spanning from the 1920s to the 1950s. An old phonograph, a 1940s movie camera on a tripod and movie reels hanging on the wall are some accessories from Old Hollywood that you can use to decorate your space. Use silver and gold platters and dishes in serving your meals. Hanging golden and silver gauze fabrics on the ceiling, using a crystal chandelier as the center point will make your home look elegant. If you are hosting a black-and-white party, drape the tables in black tablecloths and sprinkle the top with silver and gold confetti to complement the dress code. If you can afford it, roll a real red carpet to meet your guests.

Masquerade Theme Decorations

New Year’s Eve is one of the best times to host a masquerade. Just as your guests are in costume, dressing up your home in a masquerade style will provide the right ambiance to match the theme of the occasion. Hang Venetian masks in assorted styles on a focal wall or line them up along the entrance hallway walls to greet your guests. Using splashes of jewel tones of ruby, amethyst, topaz and emerald on wall paints, fabrics used for drapes, area rugs, table linens and decorative pillow covers will complement the colors that you usually find on Venetian masks. Hanging a gilded wall mirror on top of a fireplace or at any prominent location will make your space look spacious. Finally, creating flower arrangements using burgundy roses mixed with golden silk filler flowers and feathers will give your room an opulent look.
