Through their Jolie-Pitt Foundation, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt donated $1 million on Thursday to the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR. The donation was made to assist Pakistani refugees caught in the middle of the conflict between local troops and Taliban militants. This year, more than two million people in northwest Pakistan have been displaced due to the fighting.
Speaking at a World Refugee Day event in Washington D.C., Jolie said, “The refugees I have met and spent time with have profoundly changed my life. Today, I want to thank them for letting me into their lives.”
The primary purpose of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, according to their website, is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. Jolie has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the UNHCR since 2001.
